Punk, Rock, and Heavy Metal history through the original lens of Sacramento’s own John Muheim.

Before smartphones, before digital downloads—there was film. 35mm, 36 frames a roll, red darkroom light, and the smell of developer. Circles of wax pencil mark the chosen shots on a contact sheet. With vinyl spinning in the background, and a plan to catch the next gig.
Photographer John Muheim lived it and shot it.
From the hardcore punk gigs at Club Minimal in Sacramento to legendary nights at San Francisco’s Cow Palace and on, John documented an era through his lens—raw, loud, and untamed. Tales of Terror, 7 Seconds, Motörhead, Dead Kennedys, to Springsteen, Queen, Tom Petty, and on… all caught during rock n’ roll’s most defining moments, in fleeting flashes of light and shadow.
And now, his brand-new website is live—custom-built to echo the texture, soul, and storytelling of those times. We designed it to feel like flipping through an old box of prints, or laying out contact sheets on the studio floor. A place where every image has weight, story, and memory.
Inspired by old-school contact sheets, wax pencils, record players, and the carefree freedom of ‘80s teenhood.
Coming Soon: The Stories Behind the Shots
We’ll be publishing blog entries and behind-the-scenes notes—giving voice to the backstories behind these iconic images. Imagine being a fly on the wall at Club Minimal or backstage with a punk legend. That’s the kind of immersive storytelling John’s work deserves—and it’s coming your way.
What Makes a Custom Site Hit Different?
John’s site isn’t a template. It’s an intentional build—rooted in his aesthetic, era, and energy. A site like this doesn’t just showcase images. It creates an underground museum experience—like flipping through rare records at a hidden shop or stepping into a backstage moment from 1984.
At New Bird Studio, we didn’t just build John’s website—we translated his archive into a digital experience that feels like him.
This level of customization takes skill, collaboration, and vision—and we’re here to do it for you too.
P.S. Inspired to tell your own story with this kind of care?
If your business, brand, or archive deserves a site that feels less like a portfolio and more like a cultural moment—we should talk.
